Sweeping is inexpensive relative to almost any other trade visit, which is why the price is not really the interesting question. What matters is what you get for it, and that varies more between sweeps than the headline figure does.
A sweep should leave you with a clean flue, an honest account of its condition and a dated certificate. If any of those three is missing, the cheaper quote is not cheaper.
What moves the price up or down
The variables are practical rather than mysterious.
- Appliance type, because an inset stove with a fixed register plate takes longer than an open fire
- Flue length and shape, since tall stone flues with bends and soot ledges need more work
- Condition, as a badly tarred flue is a different job to a routinely maintained one
- Number of chimneys, with second and subsequent flues at the same address costing less
- Access, particularly where roof-level work or a scaffold-free terminal check is involved
What should always be included
Dust protection, a proper sweep of the full flue length rather than the first accessible section, a condition check, and a certificate. We issue the certificate every visit as standard because that is the document that matters if the chimney ever features in an insurance claim.
Where something looks wrong, a camera check is the honest way to settle it, and you should see the screen rather than be told what is up there.
Frequency is the real cost driver
Two sweeps a year on a wood-burning appliance sounds like double the cost, but a neglected flue that tars up needs specialist removal that costs several times an ordinary sweep, and in the worst case a chimney fire damages the structure itself.
Booking in late summer rather than late autumn also helps. Once the season starts, everybody wants the same fortnight.

Is a cheaper sweep worse?
Not necessarily, but check what is included. If there is no certificate, no condition report and no dust containment, you are comparing different services rather than different prices.
Do you charge less for a second chimney?
Yes. Once we are on site with the equipment out, additional flues at the same address are cheaper than separate visits.
Is there a call-out fee?
No. The price we quote is the price for the work, and travel to villages and rural properties is not charged separately.
How long does a sweep take?
A straightforward stove or open fire usually takes under an hour. Tall stone flues, inset appliances and heavily deposited chimneys take longer, and we allow the time rather than rushing.
Do you sweep in summer?
Yes, and it is the best time to book. Summer visits also catch birds' nests before the first fire of the season pushes smoke back into the room.
