Why do insurers want a sweeping certificate?

Unswept flues are a known cause of chimney fires, so an insurer settling a claim will ask when the chimney was last swept and by whom. A dated certificate from a qualified sweep answers both questions in one document.

Does any sweep's certificate carry the same weight?

Not in practice. The first thing checked is who issued it. Certificates from NVQ qualified sweeps who are members of APICS and the Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps are the most straightforward to defend.

Do I need one to sell my house?

It is not compulsory, but purchasers' solicitors regularly ask for evidence of chimney maintenance, particularly alongside HETAS paperwork for a stove installation. Having both makes the sale smoother.

Can you reissue a lost certificate?

Yes, if we carried out the sweep. We keep records, so a replacement copy can be sent out.

Is the certificate charged separately?

No. It is part of the sweep, issued every visit whether you ask for it or not.
