What size stove do I need?

Far smaller than most people expect. A typical living room needs around four to five kilowatts. Oversizing leads to a stove that is run slowly and closed down, which tars the flue and blackens the glass.

Wood or multifuel, which should I buy?

Accepted Answer

If you have a reliable supply of dry logs, a wood-only stove burns them better because it uses a bed of ash and air from above. Choose multifuel if you want the option of smokeless fuel, particularly in a smoke control area.

Question 3

Can I fit a wood burner in a house with no chimney?

Accepted Answer

Yes, using a twin wall chimney system. It costs more than lining an existing flue but it opens up rooms that never had a fireplace.

Question 4

Will the stove heat the whole house?

Accepted Answer

Not usually on its own. A stove heats the room it is in extremely well and the adjacent space a little. Boiler stoves that feed radiators are a different specification and we can discuss them at survey.

Do you work along the East Neuk coast as well as the towns?

Accepted Answer

We do. Crail, Pittenweem, Anstruther, Elie and the surrounding villages are a regular part of our round. Salt air is hard on flue terminals there, so we tend to fit stainless rather than galvanised components and check terminals on every sweep visit.

Do you cover the old mining rows in central Fife?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Much of the housing between Kirkcaldy, Glenrothes, Cardenden and Lochgelly is terraced miners' rows and post-war council stock, built with narrow shared stacks serving several homes. That layout affects both sweeping access and the way a liner has to be dropped, so we survey the stack as a whole rather than treating a single flue in isolation.

Do you charge extra for a village call-out?

Accepted Answer

No call-out fee. We group village visits so several nearby properties are done on the same run, which keeps the price the same as a town job.

Question 8

Do you take on commercial premises?

Accepted Answer

Yes, including pubs, hotels, offices and community buildings. Commercial flues are often larger, dirtier and used far harder than domestic ones, so the sweeping interval is usually shorter than once a year.

Question 9

What about an inset or cassette appliance?

Accepted Answer

Inset stoves are built into the chamber, so access for sweeping and servicing is tighter. We plan for that rather than discovering it on the day, and we will say at survey stage if a removable register plate is worth fitting.
