The rope seal around a stove door is a consumable. It compresses, hardens and loses its spring over a few seasons of heat cycling, and when it does the stove stops being a controlled appliance and becomes a box with a hole in it.
The symptoms are easy to recognise once you know them: fuel disappearing far quicker than it used to, a fire that roars regardless of the air control setting, and glass that blackens no matter what you burn.
The paper test, in one minute
With the stove cold, close a strip of paper in the door and pull it out. It should drag firmly. Repeat at the top, bottom and both sides, and at the hinge corner and the catch corner in particular.
If the paper slides out with no resistance anywhere, that section is not sealing. If it grips at the catch side and slides at the hinge side, you likely have a hinge or alignment problem as well as a rope problem.
What a leaking door actually does
Uncontrolled air enters at the wrong place, bypassing the airwash and the designed combustion path. The fire burns hot and fast when you want it steady, so you use more fuel for less useful heat.
It also disrupts the burn pattern enough to blacken the glass and to increase deposit in the flue, and where the flue draw is weak it can allow smoke and combustion gases into the room instead of drawing them away. That is the part that makes it a safety matter rather than an efficiency one.

Rope, hinge or catch
Not every sealing fault is the rope. A dropped hinge lets the door hang out of square, so one edge never contacts. A worn catch or a slack cam means the door closes but never pulls tight. A warped door, usually from overfiring, will not seal on any rope you fit.
Diagnosing which of those you have matters, because fitting new rope to a warped door is money spent on a symptom.
Replacing the rope
The old rope is removed, the channel cleaned back to bare metal so nothing sits proud, and new rope of the correct diameter bedded in with a heat resistant adhesive. Diameter is the detail people get wrong. Too thin and it never seals, too thick and the door will not close square or it stresses the glass.
The door is then checked closed on the paper test all the way round before the job is called finished.
Where this fits in a service
Door seals, glass gasket, baffle, fire bricks and grate are all wear parts, and they wear at broadly similar rates. Checking them together once a year, alongside the sweep, is why an annual service tends to pay for itself in fuel before you count anything else.
Frequently asked questions
How often does stove rope need replacing?
It varies with how hard the stove is run rather than by a fixed interval. Heavy winter use will flatten a rope faster than occasional evening fires. The paper test at the start of each season tells you where you are without guessing.
Can I fit stove rope myself?
It is one of the more approachable jobs if you are practical. Get the diameter right, clean the channel out completely, and check the seal all the way round afterwards. If the door is out of square, stop, because that is a different repair.
Is a leaking door dangerous?
It can be, particularly combined with a weak flue draw, because it allows combustion gases a path into the room. Any smoke smell while the stove is running should be treated as a reason to stop using it until it is checked.
Would this explain my black glass?
Very often, yes. The airwash relies on air arriving in a controlled stream across the glass. A leaking door disrupts that, so the glass sooties up even when the fuel is dry and the flue is clear.
