Stove output is measured in kilowatts, and there is a strong instinct to buy generously — more heat must be better. In practice, the oversized stove is the most common installation problem we come across, and it creates a chain of consequences that follow the owner for years.

Why oversizing is the bigger mistake

A stove too powerful for its room quickly makes the room uncomfortable. The owner responds by burning less fuel and closing the air controls down, which means the fire smoulders instead of burning cleanly. That produces blackened glass, heavy tar in the flue and more particulate out of the top — and it wastes fuel, because a smouldering fire converts far less of the wood's energy into heat.

An undersized stove, by contrast, simply runs hot and works hard. That is thermally healthy even if the room takes longer to warm.

The rough starting point

A common rule of thumb is to divide the room volume in cubic metres by fourteen to get an approximate kW requirement for a reasonably insulated room. For many living rooms that lands somewhere around 4 to 5kW, which is exactly the range most households actually need.

Treat it as a starting point, not an answer. It assumes an averagely insulated room at a comfortable target temperature.

What moves the number in real properties

The properties we work in vary enormously, and several factors adjust the calculation in both directions.

  • Solid stone walls with no cavity insulation — increase the output needed
  • Single glazing or large expanses of glass — increase
  • High ceilings, common in period and tenement properties — increase
  • Open-plan rooms or a stairwell drawing heat away — increase
  • Recent insulation upgrades and modern glazing — decrease
  • An exposed or coastal position with persistent wind chill — increase

The 5kW threshold worth knowing

Appliances rated above 5kW generally require dedicated permanent ventilation to the room, which means an air vent. That is not a reason to avoid a larger stove where one is genuinely needed, but it is a real consideration if you would rather not put a vent in an external wall — and it is another argument against buying bigger than necessary.

Can I heat my whole house with one stove?

A stove primarily heats the room it is in, though heat migrates through open doors and stairwells. Whole-house heating from a single appliance means a boiler stove tied into your heating system, which is a different specification and a bigger project.

Is a bigger stove better for a cold house?

Not usually. It is better to run a correctly sized stove hard than to run an oversized one closed down. If the room genuinely needs more heat, that is a sizing calculation, not a habit of buying up a size.

Do I need an air vent for a 5kW stove?

Generally the requirement applies above 5kW, but ventilation is assessed on the room rather than the label — a very airtight modern room may need provision at lower outputs. It is part of the survey.
