A stove installation is a building project in miniature: there is a survey, a specification, a compliance element and a commissioning stage. Knowing the sequence makes it much easier to ask the right questions and to spot a quote that is missing something.
1. The survey
Nothing sensible can be quoted without seeing the property. We look at the existing chimney or the potential route for a new flue, the fireplace opening and hearth, the room size and its ventilation, and the position relative to combustible materials. If there is an existing chimney, its internal condition matters — a camera survey at this point avoids surprises later.
This is also where we discuss what you actually want from the stove: primary heat source or occasional focal point, wood only or multifuel, and how the room is used.
2. Specification and written quote
The survey produces a specification: appliance output matched to the room rather than oversized, flue diameter and type, liner or twin wall system, hearth and fireplace work, and any ventilation required. The quote breaks these out so you can see what each element costs rather than getting one number.
Oversizing is the most common mistake in stove buying. A stove too large for the room ends up run slumbering with the air closed, which is bad for the glass, the flue and the air outside.
3. Preparation
Depending on the specification this can involve opening up a blocked fireplace, forming or upgrading the hearth to the required dimensions and thickness, and preparing the flue route. Where there is no chimney, this is where the twin wall route through the wall or roof is set out.
4. Flue work
For an existing chimney, that usually means sweeping and then lining with an insulated stainless liner sized to the appliance, sealed at both ends with a register plate below and a cowl above. For a property without a chimney, a twin wall insulated system is built to give the stove a correctly sized flue with the required height above the roofline.
5. Fitting and commissioning
The stove is set, connected and sealed. Then it is tested: a draw test to confirm the flue is evacuating correctly, a spillage check, and a first firing to bed everything in. A carbon monoxide alarm is fitted in the room as standard.

6. Certification
As HETAS registered installers, we self-certify the installation for building standards compliance rather than you needing a separate building warrant application for the appliance work. You receive the certificate for your records, and it is the document a solicitor will ask for when you come to sell.
Frequently asked questions
How long does an installation take?
A straightforward install into a sound, lined chimney is often a single day. Twin wall systems, fireplace opening-up or hearth construction extend that to two or more days. The survey gives you a realistic timescale before you commit.
Do I need building warrant approval?
Because we are HETAS registered, the appliance installation is self-certified rather than requiring a separate application for that work. Structural alterations, listed buildings and conservation areas can bring other requirements, which we flag at survey stage.
Can I buy the stove myself?
You can, but talk to us before you do. Output, flue spigot position and clearance requirements all affect whether a given stove suits your room and flue, and the wrong purchase is an expensive thing to discover on fitting day.
Will you take the old fire away?
Removal of an existing appliance and disposal is normally included in the quote where it applies. It will be itemised so you can see it.
