Stove and Chimney Work for Homeowners
One property, one heating decision, and usually a first stove. Here is how the process actually runs.
Most homeowners come to us at one of two moments. Either the stove is going in for the first time and they want to know what it will cost and how disruptive it will be, or the fire has been in for years and something has changed: it smells, it smokes, or the insurer has asked a question.
Neither of those needs a sales pitch. What they need is somebody to look at the actual chimney, say what it will take, and put a figure in writing. Our home survey is free and carries no obligation, and you get a written price rather than a range that moves later.
What the free home survey covers
We look at the appliance you want, the room it is going in, and the flue that has to carry the gases away. That last part is where most surprises live, which is why we check it before quoting rather than after.
- Condition and size of the existing flue, and whether a liner is needed
- Hearth and fireplace opening dimensions against the appliance you have in mind
- Room ventilation and air supply, which matters more in newer or draught-proofed homes
- Terminal height and any downdraught risk from roofline, trees or neighbouring buildings
- Output sizing, so the room is warm rather than uncomfortable
What you are left holding at the end
Paperwork is not admin for its own sake. A HETAS certificate is what proves the installation was self-certified against Building Standards without a separate building control inspection, and it is the document a solicitor asks for when you sell.
After a sweep you get a certificate too, which is what most home insurers want to see if a claim ever touches the chimney. We issue one every visit, not on request.
Living with a stove, honestly
A stove rewards being run properly and punishes being run badly. Burning wet wood is the single most common reason a homeowner ends up with black glass, tarred flues and a poor draw, and it is entirely avoidable.
We hand over written care instructions on the day and explain how to run the appliance in front of you. If something is not right in the first season, ring us.
