What free standing means in practice
A free standing stove sits out in the room on its own hearth, rather than being tucked into a fireplace opening. It gives off heat from all sides and can become the centrepiece of a living room, but it also needs more planning, because the space around it matters as much as the stove itself.
Both woodburning and multifuel stoves can be free standing, and both can be traditional or contemporary in style. What they share is a set of placement questions we answer at the survey.
The placement questions
Before we recommend a position, we work through:
- Distance to walls, beams and furniture, based on the stove's clearance requirements
- Hearth size and material under and in front of the stove
- Where the flue will run: into a chimney breast behind it, or a twin wall route
- Air supply to the room for the stove's output
- How people move around it day to day, especially with children
Flue routes for a stove in the open
A free standing stove in front of an old fireplace usually connects into the chimney through a register plate, often with a liner. In a room with no chimney, or when the stove stands well away from one, a twin wall flue carries the gases out safely. We plan the route so it is compliant and looks deliberate rather than improvised.
Your stove or ours, and what happens after
We fit free standing stoves customers already own and we supply them too, advising on size so the stove suits the room. On the day, the stove is positioned, connected, lit and commissioned with you, then signed off with a HETAS certificate. Aftercare, including sweeping and servicing, is available so it keeps working the way it did on day one.

Does a free standing stove need a hearth?
Yes. We check the hearth under and in front of the stove as part of every survey.
What if there is no chimney where I want it?
