An unused chimney over spring and summer is, from a jackdaw's point of view, a purpose-built nesting shaft. They drop sticks down until the pile jams on a bend or a narrowing, then build on top of it. The result can be a metre or more of tightly packed twig, moss and debris sitting directly above your appliance.
Homeowners usually discover it in one of two ways: the fire will not draw on the first cold evening of autumn, or there is scratching and chirping coming from behind the register plate in early summer.
Signs there is a nest above you
Nests announce themselves fairly clearly if you know what to look for. Any one of these on its own is worth a look; two or three together makes it very likely.
- Twigs, straw or dry moss appearing in the grate or on the hearth
- Scratching, rustling or bird calls audible through the fireplace
- A fire that suddenly will not draw after a summer of no use
- Smoke pushing back into the room on lighting
- A strong musty or ammonia smell from the fireplace in warm weather
- Increased flies or insects around the fireplace opening
The legal position on timing
Wild birds, their active nests and their eggs are legally protected in the UK while the nest is in use. In practice that means an active nest with eggs or chicks must be left alone until the young have fledged and the nest is genuinely abandoned. A responsible sweep will not remove an occupied nest and will tell you to wait.
Once the nest is empty, removal is straightforward and there is no reason to delay — an abandoned nest is still a fire hazard and a full blockage. Autumn, before the heating season, is the natural window.
How removal actually works
Nest material is dense, oily and interlocked, so it does not simply brush away. We use power sweeping equipment — a rotary head driven from below — to break the mass up progressively, with the fireplace sealed and a HEPA-filtered vacuum running so the debris comes into a sheeted, controlled space rather than your carpet.
Afterwards we sweep the full flue as normal and run the camera up to confirm the bore is clear from appliance to terminal. There is no point clearing three quarters of a blockage.
Stopping it happening again
A bird guard or cowl fitted to the pot is the permanent answer, and it costs a fraction of repeat removals. It also keeps rain out of the flue, which slows down the internal deterioration that unlined older stacks suffer from.
If your chimney is unused, cap it properly rather than stuffing the opening — a capped but ventilated terminal keeps birds and rain out while still letting the stack breathe, which prevents damp forming in the brickwork.
Frequently asked questions
Can I remove a bird's nest from my chimney myself?
It is legal once the nest is inactive, but it is rarely practical. Nest material packs hard against a bend and a rod pushed blindly upward can dislodge the whole mass at once, or damage the flue. There is also a real dust and mite exposure. It is a job worth paying for.
When can a nest be removed?
Only once it is inactive — no eggs, no chicks, no adults using it. Late summer through autumn is normally the safe and sensible window, which conveniently lines up with getting ready for the heating season.
Does a cowl affect how well my chimney draws?
A correctly specified cowl does not restrict draw, and anti-downdraught designs can improve it on exposed stacks. The wrong cowl on the wrong flue can cause problems, which is why it is worth matching the cowl to the appliance and the chimney rather than buying on price.
Will my insurance care?
Many household policies expect solid fuel appliances to be swept and certificated regularly. A sweeping certificate after nest removal gives you documentation that the flue was clear on that date.
